Fall home reminders

A few small checks now can help keep our homes comfortable and safe through the colder months.

Turn back the clocks: Daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, November 1. Set clocks back one hour before bed Saturday night. Many phones and electronic devices update automatically.
Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: Use the test button and replace removable batteries as needed. For sealed 10-year batteries, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check your furnace filter and replace or clean it as appropriate for your system.
Disconnect garden hoses before freezing weather arrives.

See all fall reminders

Check the batteries in thermostats, flashlights, and weather radios.
For an outdoor spigot with an indoor shutoff, shut off its supply from inside the basement, then open the outdoor spigot briefly to drain remaining water. Follow the instructions for your particular plumbing setup.
Clean the dryer lint screen after every load, and consider having the dryer vent professionally cleaned if it has been a while.
Keep flashlights, batteries, medications, and other basic supplies available in case of a power outage.
Use candles and space heaters cautiously, and never leave them unattended.

Computer: save a favorite or bookmark

With Kat’s Korner open in Edge, Chrome or Brave, press Ctrl + D on Windows, or Command + D on a Mac.
Name it Kat’s Korner. Choose the Favorites bar or Bookmarks bar as its folder, then select Save or Done.
In Edge, Chrome or Brave on Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + B if the bar is hidden. Your saved link will appear near the top of the browser.

On a Mac using Safari, use Bookmarks → Add Bookmark and choose Favorites.

Windows computer: save as an app and pin to the bottom taskbar

The taskbar is the strip of app icons along the bottom of your Windows screen. Choose your browser:

Microsoft Edge: Open the three-dot menu (…), then look under More tools → Apps → Install this site as an app. Some versions show Apps directly in the menu.
Google Chrome: Open the three-dot menu (⋮) → Cast, save, and share → Install page as app. You may also see an install icon beside the address bar.
Follow the installation prompts. When the website opens in its own window, right-click its icon on the Windows taskbar and select Pin to taskbar. Edge may offer a Pin to taskbar checkbox after installation.

Menu wording varies by browser version. If you do not see an install option, saving a favorite or bookmark above is a simple alternative.

For nonemergency maintenance, use IRM’s owner portal to submit the details and look for status updates. Your existing portal sign-in is required. If you call or email instead, ask IRM for confirmation or a request number.

IRM (In Rhodes Management) is the management company. FRONTSTEPS and Caliber are names you may see for its owner portal; these links lead to the same portal service. New users may need their account number to register. Contact IRM if you need that number or help signing up.

How to submit or view a maintenance request

Sign in and select Maintenance (the crossed-tools icon).
Select Submit New Request.
Choose the appropriate Type. For a request about your home, select Unit, then select your address under Location.
Choose the Category that best matches the issue.
In Description/Notes, explain the problem. In Issue Location, say exactly where it is, such as “rear gutter above the deck.”
Review your information, then select Submit. To leave without sending, select Close.

To view requests, return to Maintenance. Choose Current Items or All Items, then select the magnifying-glass icon beside a request for details.

Home and Maintenance views may show different records. If an expected request is missing, or a request appears at the wrong address, ask IRM to check it. Do not assume that a phone call or email automatically creates a visible portal entry.

If you are unsure which type or category to choose, contact IRM.

Show me where to click: find Association documents

Select Documents in the portal’s top menu.
Under Document Folders, expand Owners if needed.
Select the folder you need, such as Governing Documents, Insurance Certificate or Meeting Minutes. Available files appear on the right.

The initial screen may say “No Documents Available.” Select a folder first. If the material you need is still missing, ask IRM.

Show me where to click: find links and modification information

Select WebLinks in the portal’s top menu.
Under Web Link Folders on the left, select In Rhodes Website.
In the list on the right, find Modification Request and select the blue link beside it.

Planning a new deck, awning or another exterior change? Check the current alteration/modification requirements and ask IRM where to submit your application. A maintenance request is not approval to begin work.

Put recyclables loose in the cart; do not bag them.
Empty and rinse containers.
Flatten cardboard and fit it inside the cart.
Keep plastic bags, foam, cords, food waste, electronics and batteries out.

Household battery drop-off

Summit on the Park accepts common household batteries, such as AA, AAA, C and D batteries.

Look for the collection basket/tub on the table by the pool. No car batteries. Keep batteries out of your curbside recycling cart.

Katherine confirmed the household battery drop-off details by phone with the Summit on October 23, 2026. Ask staff about any battery type you are unsure of before dropping it off.

Food Compost Pilot Program

Canton residents can volunteer for the township’s food-waste composting program and use one of five designated drop-off locations. Accepted items include fruits and vegetables, meat and bones, dairy products, bread and grains, eggshells, coffee filters, grease, napkins and paper towels, and BPI-certified compostable products.

Pet waste, glass, metal and plastic are not accepted. Participants should complete Canton’s volunteer application before using the program and submit the township’s check-in form after each drop-off.

Catch a water leak early

Wi-Fi sensors can send phone alerts; standalone water alarms sound locally without an app. Choose the approach that suits your home.

Sump area: A probe is positioned to detect rising water in their sump pit.
Floor-drain area: Their sensor sits on a small piece of wood to avoid routine humidifier-drain splashes. This is their household arrangement, not a general installation instruction; a raised sensor may not detect shallow water.
Water heater: A probe at the base of the tank detects water reaching it.

Follow your device manufacturer’s placement and testing instructions. Phone alerts depend on the device, power, network and app settings. The picture illustrates their experience, not a required brand or an Association-approved installation.

If you have an HVAC maintenance agreement, check whether your fall visit is scheduled. Otherwise, consider arranging an inspection before cold weather. Follow your equipment’s instructions for filter maintenance.
